What’s soothing, splendid and chic all year round? Here’s a clue: it’s the color blue. Imagine that feeling you get from looking into a sparkling blue pool or into the clear blue sky. Now imagine having that same feeling when you walk into your living room or bedroom. That’d be awesome, right? Well, we can you have you seeing blue in no time. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer subtle touches of color here and there or big splashes of color everywhere. You can start with a light, neutral palette like the Ashley collection featured below, and enhance it with blue pillows, wall décor or a blue upholstered chair.

If you want to take it to the next level and create an ultra-blue haven, be sure to start with an accessories blueprint. Leave nothing untouched by the color blue. Try hanging a painted canvas on the wall to declare your love for the calming hue. Then, include an aqua blue rug on the floor and adorn your table tops with cool blue glass vases. Your space will be screaming, “I’ve got the blues, and if there’s a cure for it, I don’t want it!”

What’s your sectional style?

You probably have a sofa sitting somewhere in your home. But what’s the deal with sectionals?

The piece started showing up in homes during the Victorian Era and was usually made of two or more sofas that were pushed together to make a larger sofa. The sectional got a makeover in the 1950s, displaying the sleek low profile design that we see in mid-century modern furniture today. Since then, the addition of chaises, cup holders, power reclining seats and more have been introduced (we know football-watchers everywhere are praising these add-ons!).

The best thing about sectionals? They can be customized to let you express your one-of-a-kind style. You can choose which side the chaise goes on, if you want a chaise at all, what type of arms you like…you get the idea.

Another option for customizing your sectional is by adding an ottoman, or several! With a sectional like our Piedmont (below), you can use interchangeable cube ottomans in different color options. Or go with one large cocktail ottoman with a serving tray on top instead of a traditional cocktail table.

Clean your room!

Believe it or not, today is national “Clean your Room Day.” (We can hear the applause of every parent in the country). While the master bedroom is a destination for relaxing, you may have different priorities for your child’s room. So what makes a good space for the little guy or girl? Here’s our list:

Versatility: Kids grow up fast. Let your child’s room grow with them by using pieces that can be moved around and rearranged to fit their needs. For example, he can start off in a bunk bed that he shares with his little brother. When he gets a bit older, make the room his own with just the twin bed or choose a loft bed with a desk underneath. Storage options are also great for kids so they can keep their room clean (woohoo!) and stay organized.

Safety: You worry enough as a parent; don’t let your child’s bedroom be a cause for concern. Find pieces that are tested with safety in mind. At Havertys, all our kids’ furniture is tested for lead content in the surface coatings and component parts. Weight tests are also used for the wood slats on beds. For kids’ desks with hutches, the two pieces are attached with brackets on the back.

Fun! This one’s a no-brainer! Let kids be kids by adding color, character and excitement to their space. Go girly with a bright pink rug and flowery bedding. Or make his space as imaginative as he is with a patchwork bedding set and puppy prints!

Gray: the new neutral

Even before the bestselling novel hit bookstores, gray was one of those shades that we loved. But did you know it’s making a comeback in the design world in a big way? Believe it or not, the color gray is now being considered the “new neutral,” knocking out beige for the title. With its ability to offer a chic twist to traditional style, it’s the perfect starting point to decorating your home.
So you’re probably thinking “well, what can I do with gray?” Here are a few of our expert suggestions:
